A tax estimate for simple cases

This calculator covers ordinary estates of residents only, without aggregation of prior gifts, renunciation of inheritance, bequests outside the priority heirs, or generation-skipping inheritance. If any of these apply, do not use this simplified result for filing; consult Hometax or a tax professional. Inheritance tax is based on the estate as a whole, not calculated by separately applying rates to each heir's acquisition.

Order of deductions

Subtract public charges, debts and eligible funeral expenses from taxable property. Apply the larger of the KRW 200 million basic deduction plus personal deductions and the KRW 500 million lump-sum deduction; the lump-sum deduction does not apply when the spouse is the sole heir. The child deduction is KRW 50 million per child; the minor deduction is KRW 10 million for each remaining year until age 19; and the deduction for people aged 65 or over is KRW 50 million per person. For the disability deduction, check the statutory life-expectancy requirements.

If the spouse inherits nothing or less than KRW 500 million, the spouse deduction is KRW 500 million. Otherwise, take the smallest of the actual inheritance, the statutory-share limit and KRW 3 billion, subject to the KRW 500 million minimum described by the National Tax Service, even if the limit is lower. In this simple case, the statutory-share limit is the estate before funeral expenses, less public charges and debts, multiplied by the spouse's share. Deducting the actual inheritance requires compliance with the division and reporting conditions in Article 19. Under the current text, the division deadline is nine months from the day after the filing deadline.

Deduct all net financial assets up to KRW 20 million. Above that amount, deduct the larger of 20% and KRW 20 million, capped at KRW 200 million. Do not enter excluded assets such as shares held by a controlling shareholder. Total inheritance deductions are capped at the applicable deduction limit.

Calculated tax = tax base × rate − progressive deduction. No tax is imposed if the tax base is below KRW 500,000. This is the calculated tax before the 3% filing credit, gift-tax and foreign-tax credits, valuation fees, penalties and similar adjustments. Special deductions for a shared residence, business succession or farming are not included. Enter funeral expenses only after checking their statutory eligibility and limits.

National Tax Service Hometax tax estimates ↗: find the inheritance tax estimator and check again. The amount shown here is neither an official filing amount nor the tax payable. For example, without a spouse, KRW 600 million in taxable estate value and KRW 500 million in eligible deductions give a KRW 100 million tax base and KRW 10 million in calculated tax.
